CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Another plane, another city. I’ve been nonstop since leaving headquarters, but I couldn’t allow myself to rest. Resting led to thinking, and I needed to be out of my own head. I wouldn’t rest until Miles was safe—even if that was from himself.

“NYC operatives are meeting us here,” Liam said. He walked next to me, boots clanking against the wet sidewalk. “El, let us know when they arrive.”

“Copy that,” Ellie said through our coms from the SUV parked down the street. Dylan had to help support his mom, who had just lost a close friend of hers the day before, so Ellie was our eyes.

“Sorry to cut your night short,” I told Kat as she walked on my other side, wearing her usual FBI business attire: flat dress boots, dark-teal blouse, and black slacks. We were lucky she had already been in New York City.

“Duty calls.” She shrugged.

The two days we were at the fishery, there had been no sign of Miles anywhere, but a homeless person had reported seeing a human that looked like a werewolf attacking two guys on the street in the middle of the night. The NYPD dismissed it, but it was flagged by Alcorp. The NYC operatives had been watching closely throughout the day, but there weren’t any signs until our scanner picked up Rogue activity at a club less than an hour ago.

Blaring music came from inside the nightclub in front of us, but there wasn’t a bouncer out front and the doors were shut. Liam was the only one who carried an inhibitor. It wasn’t something easily mass-produced, and we also couldn’t allow our enemy to get a hold of them and use them on us. If Miles was focused on me, Liam could use the inhibitor on him.

“Kat, can you wait for the others and surround the perimeter while we go in?” Liam asked as Maya pulled on the door. Locked.

“Yes.” Kat rested a hand on her gun and walked a few paces away from the door, standing in front of a concrete wall.

The street was eerily empty and every other place in the small strip appeared to be out of business. The only thing that didn’t look like it had been abandoned was the club.

I walked up to the windows, but I couldn’t make anything out through the dark glass.

“There’s a door at the side. Breaking that might be a better idea,” Ellie said.

“Heading there now.” Liam nodded at the camera on the side of the building. I followed Liam down the side alley, with Maya and Adam right behind us. The paved alley floor was full of puddles, but my boots were waterproof. My calves weren’t so lucky, as dirty water splashed on them.

Liam held a hand up and I flattened myself against the wall next to the door, the others doing the same behind me. I pulled my gun and waited. Liam pulled on the door handle, but it was locked. He transformed and yanked on the door, breaking the lock.
